Mumbai, October 10 (Daily Kiran) : NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule expressed strong condemnation on Saturday regarding the arrest of Abhijit Dipke, founder of the Cockroach People’s Party (CJP). Dipke was detained just before a planned protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, with authorities labeling his actions as “against the Constitution.”
Dipke, along with CJP co-coordinators Saurabh Das and Ashutosh Ranka, was taken into custody after police boarded their flight upon arrival at Indira Gandhi International Airport. The Delhi police had previously denied permission for the protest.
Speaking to reporters in Mumbai, Sule said, “I strongly condemn this. There is an ongoing struggle to uphold constitutional principles in this country. People were peacefully traveling to Delhi, yet police boarded their flight to arrest them. What was the necessity of that? What were their demands? They merely wanted to reach Jantar Mantar, a site where thousands gather for protests. We have visited this site countless times, whether in power or opposition. This right was granted to us by Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar.”
She emphasized, “The manner in which the police entered the plane to unlawfully detain them is wrong and goes against the Constitution. The Constitution is being undermined. Can we not voice our demands? Young people are facing injustice.”
In response to the planned protests, security has been heightened in the National Capital Region (NCR), including border areas. Indian Railways has canceled several trains heading to New Delhi and altered their schedules. Additionally, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has closed entry and exit gates at 45 metro stations to prevent protesters from reaching Jantar Mantar.
Sule further questioned, “Am I to be afraid that there is an undeclared emergency in this country? We have all read about emergencies from long ago.” She added, “Children are frightened by all this. This is democracy, and if students want to express themselves, what is wrong with that?”
Earlier in the day, several opposition leaders, including former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, AAP national convenor and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, and former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, were also detained by police while attempting to join a protest called by the main judicial council in the capital.
