Kolkata, October 10 (Daily Kiran) : The West Bengal Congress announced on Saturday that it is inviting applications from party workers and local leaders interested in contesting the upcoming urban body elections. This initiative aims to make the candidate selection process more democratic.
Elections for various urban bodies, including the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and the Howrah Municipal Corporation (HMC), are expected to take place in the last week of November, with results likely to be declared in the first week of December.
Suvankar Sarkar, president of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee, stated that interested party workers and local leaders wishing to run for office must submit their applications between October 11 and October 16. Applications can be submitted in person at the Congress headquarters, Vidhan Bhavan, in Kolkata, or online via email.
The state Congress leadership will review all applications before finalizing the list of candidates. A party leader mentioned that this initiative aims to strengthen the organization at the local level and encourage young workers to participate in the electoral process.
During his interaction with the media, Suvankar Sarkar also criticized the Election Commission regarding alleged electoral irregularities in the recent by-elections in Nandigram and Rejinagar. He claimed there were consistent complaints of electoral misconduct in these constituencies, but the Commission failed to act on any of them.
Sarkar pointed out that the margins of victory for BJP candidates in both Nandigram and Rejinagar were so large that such disparities would not have occurred if the elections had been entirely free and fair. He emphasized that the Congress had raised concerns about electoral malpractices from the beginning, yet the Election Commission ignored their complaints.
