New Delhi, March 16: The Supreme Court has reserved its decision on a petition concerning delays in rulings by lower courts and High Courts. Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud stated during the hearing on Monday that the issue is not about any specific judge, but rather about necessary reforms within the institution. He acknowledged that the judge involved in the case is indeed a commendable judge in criminal law.
CJI Chandrachud noted that sometimes, in the rush to dispose of numerous cases, difficulties arise. After all, there are only 24 hours in a day. It is essential for judges to find effective time management strategies.
During the hearing, the Chief Justice mentioned that the amicus curiae has provided excellent suggestions for reforming the judiciary and enhancing accountability. A soft copy of the amicus recommendations will be sent to all High Courts, which can submit their suggestions to the court within ten days.
The Supreme Court raised this issue after a petition alleged that while verbal decisions were announced in court, written copies of orders and judgments often take weeks to become available. In some cases, it has taken months to receive copies of the decisions.
Currently, the Supreme Court has reserved its judgment on the matter. The court will issue an order addressing the delays in delivering judgments and uploading decisions in the future.
