Sri Lankan Navy arrests 3 Indian fishermen

Pudukottai, March 31 : Sri Lanka Navy arrested three fishermen and impounded their mechanized fishing trawler on the charges of illegal poaching in their territorial waters late on Wednesday night. Tamil Nadu fisheries officials said here on Thursday that the fishermen from Jagadapattinam coastal hamlet in Pudukottai district of the state, were detained by the Sri Lankan Naval personnel when they were fishing in seas close to the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL). Around 500 fishermen had set sail into the sea from Jagadapattinam fishing jetty yesterday morning for fishing activities. The arrested fishermen and the boat were taken to Mailadi fishery harbour, where they will be handed over to the fisheries officials for onward legal action. This was the ninth incident of arrest of Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy so far this year. With this, 103 Indian fishermen and 15 fishing trawlers were taken into captivity by Lanka for unlawful poaching in its waters. GSM CS1144
