Beijing, August 11: The Chinese Ministry of Natural Resources has announced the ongoing survey of the 16th Arctic Ocean ice station. Recently, the icebreaker named Shweylong (Snow Dragon) has successfully completed its survey at 12 ice stations.
This mission marks a new record for a single vessel in the history of Arctic expeditions, with Shweylong conducting surveys at all 12 stations. Despite facing dual challenges of ice conditions and operational difficulties, the team meticulously planned the transportation and deployment of scientific equipment on the ice surface. Over 30 sets of ice-based buoys were successfully deployed.
After approximately six hours of effort, team members discovered a block of ice measuring 1.3 meters in thickness and 1.2 meters in both length and width at one of the ice stations. This sample will be used to measure the mechanical properties of sea ice in the Arctic environment.
During the current operation, observations were made on atmospheric boundary layers, the physics of sea ice, sub-ice ecology, and the underlying ocean. Additionally, the team established an unmanned observation network in the Arctic Ocean and tested advanced marine monitoring equipment developed domestically for operational applications.
