New Delhi, February 11: Congress MP Sukdev Bhagat has expressed that suppressing the opposition’s voice in Parliament poses a significant threat to democracy. He emphasized that the proceedings in Parliament should continue smoothly until 8 PM, allowing for open discussions on national issues. Bhagat stated that stifling the opposition is unacceptable, as Parliament is not merely a platform for the ruling party but the very essence of democracy.
He pointed out that disruptions are inevitable when the proceedings are influenced by the ruling party’s convenience. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the ruling party to ensure that the opposition has ample opportunity to speak. This is not only a parliamentary tradition but also a fundamental democratic value.
Bhagat remarked that when sensitive issues arise, such as a no-confidence motion, the chair must act not out of legal obligation but moral responsibility. Respect for tradition and the Constitution should always prevail. The role of the chair is not solely to protect the ruling party but also to uphold the strength of democracy.
He also highlighted infrastructure issues in Delhi, referencing the tragic death of a 30-year-old man in an open drain in Rohini’s Sector 32. Just days earlier, another young man lost his life after falling into a pit in Jahangirpuri. Bhagat stressed that as the capital of the country, such incidents in Delhi raise concerns about conditions in other regions.
Bhagat called for strict action and vigilance from the government. He insisted that accountability is essential to prevent the recurrence of such incidents. Simply reacting to events is insufficient; proactive measures must be taken. The government should ensure there is no negligence regarding safety and infrastructure, and if negligence occurs, strict action must be taken against those responsible.
