Gangtok, May 19: In response to a global crisis, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal has led Sikkim to become the first state in India to implement an ‘Odd-Even’ vehicle policy aimed at fuel savings.
Under this new system, private and government vehicles with odd-numbered registration plates are allowed to operate on Tuesdays, while those with even-numbered plates can drive on Wednesdays.
This regulation is being enforced on state highways in the Himalayan region, although taxis and two-wheelers are exempt from these restrictions.
Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang announced that to minimize public inconvenience, private vehicles will be permitted to operate without restrictions on Saturdays and Sundays.
This initiative is part of Sikkim’s broader effort to reduce fuel consumption and promote responsible transportation practices. The Chief Minister has also been seen using public transport and walking to official events, signaling the government’s commitment to setting an example.
However, the implementation of this policy has elicited mixed reactions from residents. Local resident Keshav Sapkota noted that while the measure may be a symbolic administrative effort, given Sikkim’s relatively small population and limited vehicle density, it is unlikely to significantly impact India’s overall fuel consumption.
He pointed out the geographical challenges faced by people in the mountainous state, stating that only a few urban areas have good connectivity, while much of the state consists of inaccessible terrain, causing inconvenience for many.
Another resident, Reman Chhetri, welcomed the initiative, highlighting Sikkim’s consistent example in implementing national policies related to sustainable development and public discipline. He remarked that the Chief Minister’s use of public transport and walking in various locations encourages citizens to adopt similar behaviors.
