Thiruvananthapuram, March 9: Sanju Samson played a pivotal role in helping India secure the T20 World Cup 2026 title, showcasing remarkable performances in the final three matches. He was named ‘Player of the Series.’ His father, Vishwanath Samson, expressed his pride in his son’s achievements while recalling the challenges Sanju faced early in his career.
Vishwanath stated, “I am extremely happy with my son’s performance. He was disturbed by people and faced a lot of harassment. I hope that this will not happen for a few days now.”
Vishwanath, a former constable with the Delhi Police and an accomplished football player, shared insights into their family’s journey. Sanju received his education and cricket coaching in Delhi. However, after his impressive performances, he was not selected for the Under-13 team, prompting Vishwanath to take voluntary retirement and move to Kerala. There, Sanju trained and shone at the junior level.
Vishwanath reminisced, “I got a job with the Delhi Police at 18. I was part of the police football team from the age of 19 until I was 42. My children grew up in Delhi. Sanju scored 500 runs in a single tour but was not included in the team. They claimed he was only 10 years old, while the tournament was for 13-year-olds. If that was the case, then Messi was in the team at 17, and Sachin Tendulkar at 15. They were not considering Sanju due to his age. If he doesn’t perform as well next year, will he still get a chance?”
He added, “When a child performs well, they should be rewarded. After Sanju was not selected for the Delhi state team at Under-13, I decided to return to Kerala. My wife questioned this decision, but I believed that if Sanju continued to perform at such a level, he would not be the same player at 17. I was confident that if he excelled in Kerala, the entire state would support him. I left my job and have seen people apologize to Sanju. I have forgotten all the bad experiences. For me, everything is good now.”
