Sanju Samson Shines Bright in T20 World Cup 2026 Despite Being Overlooked

New Delhi, March 6: The Indian cricket team has secured its place in the finals of the T20 World Cup 2026. Sanju Samson played a crucial role in this achievement, leading the team to victory in the semifinals. Against the West Indies, he scored an impressive 97 runs not out, earning India a spot in the semifinals. Following that, he delivered a powerful performance against England, scoring 89 runs off just 42 balls.

Despite being overlooked repeatedly, Sanju Samson has consistently risen to the occasion. In the T20 World Cup 2026, he made the most of every opportunity he received. However, before his memorable innings against the West Indies and England, the Indian wicketkeeper-batsman faced numerous ups and downs. He often had to prove his capabilities, with questions raised about his form after a few quiet matches. Yet, he has always responded with remarkable performances.

Before the Asia Cup 2025, Samson was in excellent form and was expected to partner with Abhishek Sharma at the top of the order. However, to accommodate Shubman Gill in the T20 team, Samson’s batting position was altered. During the Asia Cup, he batted at both number five and six, resulting in a less-than-stellar performance. After Gill’s continuous failures in T20, the responsibility of opening was handed back to Samson.

Samson’s bat remained silent during the series against New Zealand, while Ishan Kishan made a significant impact, scoring 215 runs at a strike rate of 231 across four matches. Consequently, Kishan was paired with Abhishek Sharma as the opening duo, forcing Samson to sacrifice his position once again.

However, it seemed that Samson was waiting for the right moment. He sat on the bench during the initial matches of the T20 World Cup 2026, but luck smiled upon him in the Super-8 round. With Rinku Singh absent, Samson got his chance in the playing eleven. He proved his form by scoring 24 runs off 15 balls against Zimbabwe. Then came the evening that Samson described as the most memorable of his career.

In a must-win match against the West Indies, Samson scored an unbeaten 97 runs off 50 balls, single-handedly securing India’s place in the semifinals. Critics had often questioned his tendency to throw away his wicket, but in this innings, he displayed patience and skill, valuing both boundaries and singles.

Samson continued his impressive form in the semifinals against England, scoring 89 runs off 42 balls and winning hearts with his performance. He showcased that he is indeed a player for big matches, demonstrating his ability to perform on grand stages.
