Sanju Samson Envisions More World Cup Wins for India

New Delhi, March 16: Sanju Samson, the hero of India’s triumph in the T20 World Cup 2026 and the ‘Player of the Tournament,’ expressed his disbelief at the team’s victory on home soil. He remains optimistic that with the emergence of new talent, India will have numerous opportunities to win more trophies in the future.

Speaking to broadcasters during the BCCI Awards in New Delhi, Samson stated, “I still can’t believe it. Every morning, I wake up and think, did this really happen? Honestly, that’s how I feel. However, I believe that with the exceptional players we have in our country, this success will be repeated time and again. The rapid emergence of new players in India will certainly lead to more victories.”

Samson’s performance in the T20 World Cup 2026 was remarkable. Initially, he did not get a chance to play in the starting matches. However, he seized every opportunity that came his way. In a crucial match against the West Indies, he scored 97 runs, securing a semi-final spot for India. He followed this with an unbeaten 89 runs against England in the semi-finals. In the final against New Zealand, the wicketkeeper-batsman delivered another stellar performance, scoring 89 runs off just 46 balls. Throughout the tournament, Samson amassed 321 runs at a strike rate of 199 in just five innings.

Samson further remarked, “You can only dream about where you want to go, but you cannot decide how to get there. My life and career are a perfect example of this. A few years ago, I wanted to achieve this milestone. I wanted to win the World Cup for my country, but fate had its own plan and story. That’s why it all feels like a movie to me. I thoroughly enjoyed this entire journey.”

He noted that initially, his focus was solely on his performance, especially during the series against New Zealand. However, when he was unexpectedly dropped from the team, he later realized that the team needed him back. This shift in perspective changed his approach.

In major tournaments like the World Cup, he emphasized that the focus should not only be on individual performance but also on the team’s needs. During a match against Zimbabwe, he felt the team’s expectations of him and recognized his special role within the squad. This realization sparked a change in him, boosting his confidence that the team required his contribution. Samson mentioned that he had worked hard both mentally and physically, which gave him the assurance that he was prepared. He just needed to do what he does best.
