S. Jaishankar Meets Chilean Foreign Minister to Strengthen Bilateral Relations

New Delhi, May 13: Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar met with his Chilean counterpart, Francisco Pérez Mackenna, on Wednesday. During their bilateral talks, both leaders discussed enhancing cooperation across various sectors.

Jaishankar shared insights on social media platform X, stating, “The meeting with Chile’s Foreign Minister Francisco Pérez Mackenna was positive. We discussed diversifying markets and supply sources, boosting exports of priority products, and facilitating the service economy.”

He added, “We also agreed to collaborate on multilateral and multi-country platforms.”

Mackenna is on a seven-day official visit to India, which began on May 9. Upon arriving in New Delhi, he expressed on X, “This visit will be a great opportunity to strengthen relations between Chile and India. We are eager to deepen our partnership, expand trade and investment opportunities, and advance cooperation in various fields.”

On Tuesday, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal held a breakfast discussion with Mackenna and his delegation.

Following the meeting, Goyal stated that India and Chile reviewed the progress of ongoing negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) and discussed measures to further strengthen bilateral trade, investment, and strategic cooperation.

Goyal remarked, “We had a fruitful discussion with Chile’s Foreign Minister Francisco Pérez Mackenna and his delegation during breakfast.”

He emphasized, “We reviewed the progress of CEPA negotiations and explored ways to deepen trade, investment, and strategic partnerships.”

The Union Minister highlighted that India values its long-standing friendly partnership with Chile and is committed to enhancing economic relations and people-to-people connections for shared development and prosperity.

He stated, “India values its relationship with Chile. We are committed to strengthening economic engagement and connections between our peoples for shared growth and prosperity.”

This discussion comes at a time when India is advancing several agreements with key global partners to boost exports, attract investments, and diversify supply chains amid global economic uncertainties.

Later, Mackenna participated in a roundtable discussion with Indian and Chilean business leaders, emphasizing the need to enhance trade and investment between the two nations.
