Russia Announces Ceasefire with Ukraine Amid Victory Day Celebrations

Moscow, May 8: The Russian Ministry of Defense has declared a ceasefire with Ukraine, effective from midnight on May 8 until May 10. This announcement comes amid ongoing conflict between the two nations.

According to local media, the decision coincides with the 81st anniversary of the Soviet victory in World War II.

The Russian government news agency TASS reported that the ceasefire was ordered by President Vladimir Putin, who serves as the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces. The ceasefire will be in effect during the commemorative events for the Great Patriotic War.

On May 4, during the 8th European Political Community Summit in Yerevan, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky mentioned the upcoming Victory Day parade on May 9. He suggested that military equipment might not be displayed this year, marking a potential first in many years. Concerns were raised about the possibility of drones hovering over Red Square during the parade.

Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, warned that European Union countries are mistaken if they believe they can ignore Zelensky’s aggressive statements.

She stated, “We are well aware of the Western countries’ attitude towards May 9. They are continuously destroying Soviet monuments and attempting to erase the memories of Soviet soldiers while trying to rewrite history.”

Reports indicate that in response to potential Ukrainian drone attacks during the Victory Day parade in Moscow, Russian diplomats and military officials have suggested that the Russian military could launch a significant missile strike on Kyiv. They noted that while Russia has the capability, it has refrained from such actions so far.

The Russian Foreign Ministry also summoned the Armenian ambassador regarding Zelensky’s statements in Yerevan. Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin met with Armenian Ambassador Gurgen Arsenyan in Moscow, stating that providing a platform for Zelensky’s “terroristic threats” against Russia is completely unacceptable.
