New Delhi, May 11: Russia and Ukraine have accused each other of violating a three-day ceasefire agreement that was supposed to be in effect from Saturday to Monday.
According to a report by the Xinhua news agency, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed that the Ukrainian army violated the ceasefire 16,071 times within the last 24 hours. In response, Russia stated it targeted Ukrainian rocket launchers, artillery, mortar positions, command posts, and drone launch sites.
On Saturday, Russia reported 8,970 ceasefire violations across various regions. Meanwhile, Ukraine contended that Russia continued its attacks despite the ceasefire. Ukrainian officials reported that at least one person was killed and 15 others injured due to Russian strikes on Sunday.
The General Staff of Ukraine’s army issued a statement indicating that Russian forces launched 60 attacks on Ukrainian positions on Sunday.
The ceasefire was agreed upon on Friday to coincide with the Victory Day celebrations, marking the anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory in World War II. Local media reported that the Russian Defense Ministry announced a ceasefire from midnight on May 8 to May 10, as directed by President Vladimir Putin.
Earlier, on May 4, during the European Political Community summit, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticized Russia’s Victory Day parade scheduled for May 9. He remarked that if the parade were to occur without military equipment, it would be the first time in many years, suggesting that Russia fears drones might hover over Red Square.
