Rohit Sharma Deserves Padma Shri for Bringing Glory to India: Coach Dinesh Lad

Mumbai, January 27 – Former Indian cricket team coach Dinesh Lad has expressed his joy over Rohit Sharma’s selection for the prestigious Padma Shri award. Lad praised Rohit for his outstanding achievements and said the cricketer truly deserves this honour for making the nation proud.

In an exclusive interview, Dinesh Lad said, “I am happy that people will now know me as the coach of Padma Shri awardee Rohit Sharma. The little boy I once brought to my school has grown into a great cricketer and is now receiving one of the highest honours of the country. It feels wonderful to see this.”

Lad added, “Rohit has illuminated the nation’s name through his leadership, winning the T20 World Cup and Champions Trophy for India. As a batsman, he holds numerous significant records. He is fully deserving of this award, and I thank the Government of India for recognising his contributions.”

Speaking about Rohit’s character, Lad noted, “What stands out about Rohit Sharma is his self-confidence. When he was selected for the Mumbai Under-19 team, he told me, ‘Sir, I will buy a Mercedes car.’ For an Under-19 cricketer, such a statement reflects immense belief in oneself. Although young players do not earn much, he was certain of his future. Today, he owns many top model cars. I am confident Rohit Sharma will play in the 2027 ODI World Cup and retire only after helping India win the title.”

Lad further remarked, “I believe coaches cannot make a great cricketer; it depends on the player’s talent and hard work. Coaches can only guide them. When I first saw Rohit, I recognised his potential to become a great batsman. I advised him to focus on his batting, and through his dedicated effort, he has become one of the world’s finest. His success is the result of his hard work, which makes me very happy.”

On another note, Dinesh Lad expressed pride in his other protégé, Siddhesh Lad, who has recently been appointed captain of the Mumbai Ranji team. “His performance has been excellent lately. He has emerged as a crisis manager for Mumbai, stepping up whenever the team faces difficulties. That is why he has been given Mumbai’s captaincy, and I am very pleased,” Lad said.
