Mumbai, February 27: The debate continues between young sitar player Rishabh Rikhiram Sharma and Anoushka Shankar regarding the claim that Rishabh is the last disciple of the legendary sitarist and musician, Pandit Ravi Shankar. Rishabh asserts that the guru considered him his final student, a statement he made at a recent event. This claim has been vehemently denied by Anoushka Shankar, the daughter of the late Pandit Ravi Shankar.
The official music institute of Pandit Ravi Shankar has also refuted Rishabh’s assertion, providing several clarifications. The institute stated that while Rishabh did receive some lessons from Pandit Ravi Shankar, he was never formally recognized as the last disciple. They emphasized that the event where Rishabh made his claim was neither officially organized nor conducted with the presence of a priest, as per traditional customs. The guru did not provide Rishabh with any formal initiation or extensive teaching on that day.
The institute further clarified that on February 10, 2012, Pandit Ravi Shankar attended Rishabh’s concert in a wheelchair. During this event, he agreed to introduce Rishabh to the audience, stating, “This new, wonderful young boy has just become my disciple, and I have taught him some lessons.” However, neither during the concert nor afterward did the guru refer to Rishabh as his disciple. Rishabh’s education and musical training were guided by Parimal Sadaphal.
Following the institute’s statement, it is clear that Pandit Ravi Shankar’s youngest disciples are Shubhendra Rao and Anoushka Shankar, who began their training at the ages of four and seven, respectively. The last disciples were Nishad Gadgil and Dr. Scott Iseman. After this clarification, Rishabh Rikhiram Sharma’s claims have been proven incorrect. The young sitar player is known for his modern interpretations of classical songs, with his rendition of ‘Shiv Kailashon Ke Vasi’ gaining significant popularity.
