New Delhi, May 2: The Election Commission of India has announced re-elections for all polling stations in the Falta Assembly constituency of West Bengal. This decision follows serious electoral offenses and violations of democratic processes observed during the voting on April 29.
The Election Commission stated, “Due to significant electoral crimes and democratic process violations at numerous polling stations in the Falta Assembly constituency on April 29, we direct that fresh voting be conducted at all 285 polling stations, including auxiliary polling centers. Voting will take place on May 21 from 7 AM to 6 PM, with counting scheduled for May 24.”
This announcement came just hours after widespread protests by local residents in the South 24 Parganas district. Hundreds of villagers demanded enhanced security and called for re-elections in the area. Tensions escalated in Hasimnagar village, where a large number of protesters, including women carrying BJP flags, blocked roads.
In response, a significant deployment of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel was made to the site, assuring residents of adequate security measures.
This year’s assembly elections in West Bengal saw the highest voter turnout since independence, with an average voting percentage of approximately 93% during both phases held on April 23 and April 29.
Previously, the highest national voter turnout was recorded in Tripura in 2013, with a percentage of 91.82%. In West Bengal, the highest turnout prior to this was during the 2011 assembly elections, marking the end of 34 years of Left Front rule and the beginning of the Trinamool Congress government led by Mamata Banerjee. The counting of votes will take place on May 4, with results announced on the same day. Most exit polls, with few exceptions, predict an end to the 15-year rule of the Trinamool Congress and a shift in power within the state.
