New Delhi, March 20: The 19th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to kick off on March 28. Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) will aim to defend their title this season. However, Faf du Plessis believes that RCB’s success in IPL 2026 largely depends on the availability of Josh Hazelwood.
Josh Hazelwood played a crucial role in RCB’s championship win in IPL 2025. He took 22 wickets in 12 matches, showcasing exceptional bowling skills with an economy rate of 8.77. Unfortunately, Hazelwood suffered a hamstring injury during the Sheffield Shield tournament on November 12 last year and has not played since. Due to his lack of fitness, he was also absent from the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2026. Consequently, he will miss the initial matches of IPL 2026.
In an interview with ESPN Cricinfo, Faf du Plessis emphasized Hazelwood’s importance to the bowling attack, stating that he excels with the new ball and in the final overs. His absence could pose significant challenges for the team. Du Plessis recalled that when Hazelwood was part of the team, RCB had a formidable bowling lineup. Without him, there is a considerable void, especially since he takes wickets during the powerplay and delivers outstanding performances in the closing overs. Thus, Du Plessis feels RCB’s success heavily relies on Hazelwood’s availability.
The former Proteas batsman also noted that building a strong bowling attack at RCB’s home ground, M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, has always been a challenge due to the pitch’s favorable conditions for batsmen. This makes the role of experienced bowlers even more critical. A finger spinner is often needed at Chinnaswamy, and for RCB to succeed in the upcoming season, a proper synergy among bowlers, including top spinners and seasoned fast bowlers like Hazelwood, is essential.
RCB will begin their campaign in IPL 2026 on March 28 against Sunrisers Hyderabad at their home ground, M. Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium. Under the captaincy of Rajat Patidar, RCB ended an 18-year title drought by winning the championship in IPL 2025.
