Rahul Gandhis Social Media Post Sparks Political Debate Amid Impeachment Calls for Election Chief
Rahul Gandhi shares thoughts on turbulence and peace as opposition demands impeachment of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

New Delhi, September 27 (Daily Kiran) : Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, has stirred political discussions with a recent post on the social media platform ‘X’. He expressed, “I enjoy swimming in the sea when the waves are high. It teaches us that turmoil can also be a form of peace.”
This statement comes at a time when the opposition has intensified calls for the impeachment of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, following media reports of discord among election commissioners.
Previously, several parties from the Congress-led ‘INDI’ alliance staged protests across India, including in Delhi, demanding Kumar’s resignation. The Kerala Congress highlighted a claim from former Kerala Chief Secretary G.G. Thompson, stating that Kumar approached him to contest elections on a BJP ticket, even suggesting a ministerial position. Questions have arisen regarding who authorized Kumar to extend such offers and his alleged involvement in political recruitment for the BJP in 2016.
In response, Gandhi remarked, “Initially, Gyanesh Kumar, then a serving IAS officer, was used for recruitment by the BJP. Later, Modi and Shah appointed him as an umpire, entrusting him with match-fixing responsibilities in India’s elections.”
The opposition accuses the Election Commission of operating at the behest of the ruling party, alleging that names are being removed from voter lists under the guise of Special Intensive Revision (SIR). In the midst of these allegations, the Election Commission held a crucial meeting and released a press note to clarify its position. The Commission stated that several decisions, including the SIR, have been made across the country in recent months.
Following this press release, the BJP has launched counterattacks on the Congress, questioning the legitimacy of claims regarding a commissioner’s dissent when all decisions were made unanimously.
The press release indicated that an order for SIR was issued on June 24, 2025, for all states and union territories, starting in Bihar, and followed by West Bengal and 30 other regions. The Commission confirmed that the SIR program for 12 states and union territories was initiated on August 27, 2025, and for 19 others on May 14, 2026, all with unanimous approval. It also noted that the total number of voters would only be determined after the final publication in the remaining 12 states during the third phase.
