Pune, July 19: In a commendable action, Pune police have successfully returned the full amount of ₹35,000 to Swati Shirish Chirmule, the mother of Marathi film and television actress Bhargavi Chirmule, after a cyber fraud incident. Approximately one year ago, cybercriminals deceived her under the pretext of a gas bill.
Swati Chirmule, 70, resides in the Sudarshan Apartment located in Karvenagar, Pune. On the evening of August 23, 2025, she received a video call regarding an MNG gas connection bill. The scammers, posing as authorized representatives, tricked her into completing several online procedures, resulting in the withdrawal of ₹35,000 from her bank account.
Upon realizing the fraud, Swati Chirmule promptly filed an online complaint with the National Cyber Helpline. Based on her complaint, the case was assigned to the Warje Malwadi police station, where the cyber team initiated an investigation.
Under the guidance of a senior police inspector, the cyber team conducted a technical analysis to identify the bank account used in the fraud. They subsequently froze the account, ensuring the stolen amount was secured. After completing the necessary legal procedures, Swati Chirmule received her ₹35,000 back on July 18, 2026.
Following the recovery of the funds, actress Bhargavi Chirmule visited the Warje Malwadi police station with her mother. She expressed gratitude to the police officials and the cyber team, stating that their timely action and efforts led to justice.
According to police officials, promptly filing a complaint after falling victim to cyber fraud significantly increases the chances of recovering the lost amount. In this case, the victim’s quick reporting and the cyber team’s technical investigation played a crucial role in securing the funds and facilitating their return.
