
Kolkata, May 17: Protests erupted in the Tiljala area of Park Circus, Kolkata, on Sunday against the demolition of illegal constructions by bulldozers. A large crowd gathered, attempting to block the roads. Protesters reportedly hurled bricks at police officers and vandalized several police vehicles. Many officers sustained injuries, and buses on the road were also damaged.
The police have arrested several individuals in connection with the incident. Ashesh Biswas, the Additional Police Commissioner of Kolkata, stated that no accused would be spared. Both Kolkata police and central forces were deployed at the scene. Sources indicate that the Beniyapukur police station has detained a total of 30 people so far.
A bus driver, speaking to a news agency, claimed that a female member of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was traveling on his bus. As the force disembarked near the Park Circus crossing, the bus came under attack. The driver alleged that the windshield of the bus was shattered during the stone-pelting, and he himself was injured. He noted that over 1,000 people were present at the scene.
According to the police, local residents gathered at Park Circus to protest against the use of bulldozers for demolishing illegal constructions in Tiljala. The police stated that this crowd had not obtained prior permission. Along with local residents, several outsiders were reportedly present at the protest site. Tensions escalated when police attempted to clear the road and disperse the crowd. Shortly after, bricks were allegedly thrown at police officers, causing chaos in the area.
