Protests Erupt Across Italy Against Rising Costs and Education Crisis
Italy faces widespread protests against rising inflation and education issues, prompting a response from Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

Rome, October 18 (Daily Kiran) : In Italy, public outrage has erupted against rising inflation and a deteriorating education system. Students, teachers, and trade unions have taken to the streets in several cities, including Rome, where schools have been occupied and clashes with police have occurred.
Inspired by recent movements in France and Spain, various protests are currently unfolding across Italy, all aimed at opposing Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s right-wing government.
Prime Minister Meloni condemned the ongoing demonstrations, warning that such incidents cannot be overlooked. In a post on the social media platform X, she expressed her respect for the thousands of peaceful protesters, including those involved in a demonstration called by the CGIL union, which featured leftist leaders. She emphasized the importance of public participation in strengthening democracy, regardless of the issues or demands being raised.
However, Meloni noted that the violence seen in some Italian cities cannot be ignored. In Milan, stones were thrown at police and security forces, resulting in injuries to several officers and incidents of vandalism. Conditions deteriorated to the point where a procession had to be halted.
In Turin, individuals were stopped while armed with stones and hammers intended for breaking windows. Meanwhile, violence in Bologna led to the precautionary closure of a railway station, as some troublemakers took advantage of the protests to incite chaos and attack those maintaining public order.
In her post, Meloni reiterated, “The right to protest belongs to everyone, but sacrificing our cities to violence and arson is not a right.” She called on opposition parties to avoid ambiguity on this issue, urging them to clearly denounce the violent incidents and advocate for peaceful demonstrations. “Everyone should unite against such scenes. Silence or hesitation can be seen as a form of support for violence. In these matters, silence is unacceptable.”
