Progress in Construction of Chinas Deepest High-Speed Railway Shield Tunnel

Beijing, April 6: The Shenzhen-Changsha railway line, connecting the cities of Shenzhen and Changsha in Guangdong province, is a crucial part of China’s coastal high-speed railway network. The construction has now entered a significant phase.

The Chuchanghe Tunnel is the world’s deepest shield tunnel for high-speed rail. After over four years of efforts, China’s self-developed large-diameter tunneling machine, Shanchang-1, has excavated more than 4 kilometers, reaching a depth of 113 meters. This achievement sets a world record for the deepest underwater high-speed railway shield tunnel.

The tunnel’s deepest point is 116 meters underwater, where the water pressure is exceptionally high. The geological conditions along the Shanchang-1 route are also quite complex, passing through 13 different strata, five types of complex geology, and six fault zones.

The Chuchanghe Tunnel is a key control project of the Shenzhen-Changsha railway, with a total length of 13.69 kilometers. Once completed, the railway will reduce travel time from Shenzhen to Changsha to just one hour, significantly enhancing the transportation network in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
