Liverpool, October 20 (Daily Kiran): A dramatic late goal from Harry Maguire earned Manchester United a thrilling 2–1 victory over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday night, handing the hosts their fourth consecutive defeat — their worst run in 11 years.

Manchester United

Maguire’s powerful 84th-minute header capped a strong performance from United and secured manager Rúben Amorim’s side their second straight Premier League win, a first under his tenure.

Liverpool had earlier equalised through Cody Gakpo in the 78th minute, cancelling out Bryan Mbeumo’s early strike for United. However, Maguire’s late intervention ensured the visitors took all three points.

The defeat leaves Liverpool four points behind league leaders Arsenal, intensifying pressure on coach Arne Slot, whose side has now lost four straight matches despite spending nearly £450 million in the transfer window.

Meanwhile, the victory lifts Manchester United to ninth place, now just two points behind Liverpool, easing pressure on Amorim after a mixed start to his campaign.

Match Highlights

The game began disastrously for Liverpool when, in the first minute, Mbeumo outpaced Virgil van Dijk to convert Amad Diallo’s pass and put United ahead. Tensions rose when referee decisions — including one involving an apparent head injury to Alexis Mac Allister — angered home supporters.

Liverpool’s big-money signing Florian Wirtz was once again left on the bench, while Gakpo missed a clear first-half chance from Mohamed Salah’s cross. United also wasted opportunities, with Bruno Fernandes hitting wide and goalkeeper Sanne Lemmens denying Alexander Isak.

In the second half, Gakpo struck the post twice before finally scoring from Federico Chiesa’s low cross. But Liverpool’s parity lasted only six minutes — Maguire, left unmarked in the box, headed home Fernandes’ looping cross to make it 2–1 for United.

Gakpo had another late chance to level the score but failed to convert Frimpong’s pass.

The result marked Liverpool’s first Premier League home defeat in over a year, dealing a major blow to their title hopes, while giving United renewed confidence heading into the remainder of the season.
