Kolkata, May 1: Political tensions are escalating in West Bengal regarding the voting process. The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) has leveled serious allegations of vote manipulation, while the opposition dismisses these claims, raising concerns about the democratic framework in the state. Meanwhile, disputes surrounding the Election Commission’s decisions and arrangements are intensifying.
TMC leader Kunal Ghosh has accused the election process of lacking transparency. He stated, “The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) is distorting facts and diverting attention from real issues.”
Ghosh referred to a strong room located at the Khudiram Anushilan Center in Kolkata, claiming suspicious activities were observed there. According to him, CCTV footage obtained by the media shows individuals handling ballots without the presence of candidates or their agents, raising numerous questions.
He also demanded that media outlets be granted direct access to CCTV cameras to ensure transparency in the electoral process. Ghosh emphasized, “Not only political parties or candidates but also media organizations recognized by the Election Commission should have the right to observe the monitoring system of the strong room. This will help eliminate any doubts and strengthen public trust.”
The TMC has also objected to the Election Commission’s decision to conduct re-voting at certain booths. Kunal Ghosh remarked, “Voting was conducted peacefully, and demanding forced re-voting is inappropriate. The TMC will win by a large margin at the booths where re-voting occurs.”
On the other hand, opposition parties have outrightly rejected the TMC’s allegations, accusing the state government of undermining democracy. CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat stated, “The democratic situation in West Bengal has become extremely concerning. Questions about the fairness of electoral processes have been raised consistently during the TMC’s tenure, and opposition parties have often been denied the opportunity to contest elections freely.”
Karat further noted that opposition candidates have been obstructed from filing nominations on several occasions, including during the panchayat elections. According to her, this situation poses a dangerous signal for democracy and undermines the credibility of the electoral system.
