Political Landscape Shifts in Raebareli Ahead of 2027 Elections

Political dynamics in Raebareli are changing as parties gear up for the 2027 elections, with the SP aiming to maintain its 2022 gains.

Raebareli, November 1 (Daily Kiran) : Political tensions are rising in Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh, as parties prepare for the 2027 assembly elections. This district, known as a stronghold of the Congress party, is experiencing a shift in political dynamics. Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, represents this area.

In the 2022 assembly elections, the Samajwadi Party (SP) made significant gains, winning four out of six seats and delivering a setback to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). As the 2027 elections approach, the SP is poised to replicate its success, while the BJP is strategizing to reclaim its foothold in the region.

Raebareli was established by the British in 1858 and named after its headquarters. There are various theories about its name, including one that suggests it derives from the ‘Bhar’ community, which originally founded the city. Another theory posits that ‘Rai’ refers to a title held by the Kayastha community, which ruled the area for an extended period.

The district played a notable role in the Indian independence movement. On August 8, 1942, during the Quit India Movement, large-scale arrests occurred, and police violence resulted in casualties. Many locals were also arrested during the call for individual satyagraha.

Industrially, Raebareli is significant, housing major government enterprises such as NTPC Unchahar, the Rail Coach Factory, and the Indian Telephone Industries, providing thousands of jobs. The district spans 4,043 square kilometers, encompassing six tehsils, 12 blocks, and 1,574 villages. Hindi is the predominant language spoken here.

According to the census, Raebareli has a population of 2,903,507, with a rural population of 2,622,247 and an urban population of 281,260. The district has 1,495,244 men and 1,408,263 women, with 30.60% belonging to scheduled castes. The literacy rate stands at 68.41%, with male literacy at 78.64% and female literacy at 57.58%. The sex ratio is 942 women for every 1,000 men, and the population density is 721.

In terms of connectivity, the nearest airport is in Amausi, Lucknow, located 82 kilometers away. Raebareli Junction is well-connected by rail, and bus services facilitate road access. Key tourist attractions include Dalmau, Indira Udyan, Samaspur Bird Sanctuary, and Behata Bridge.

In the electoral landscape, Raebareli has one Lok Sabha seat, 36-Raebareli. In the 2024 general elections, Rahul Gandhi won this seat, receiving 687,649 votes, while BJP candidate Dinesh Pratap Singh garnered 297,619 votes.

The district has six assembly seats: 177-Bachhrawan, 179-Harchandpur, 180-Raebareli Sadar, 182-Sareni, and 183-Unchahar, all part of the Raebareli Lok Sabha constituency, with 181-Salon partially belonging to the Amethi constituency. The results from 2022 surprised many, with the SP winning in Bachhrawan, Harchandpur, Sareni, and Unchahar, while Aditi Singh and Ashok Kumar from the BJP secured seats in Raebareli Sadar and Salon, respectively. As the 2027 elections approach, the question remains whether the SP can maintain its lead or if the BJP will succeed in breaking into this traditional Congress bastion.
