New Delhi, February 19: In a significant move to make artificial intelligence (AI) accessible to the masses, HMD India announced a strategic partnership with Indian startup Sarvam AI at the ‘India AI Impact Summit 2026′ held in the national capital on Thursday.

The collaboration aims to integrate the Sarvam Personal Assistant into Nokia feature phones and HMD devices, ensuring that advanced AI features reach millions who do not use smartphones.

Ravi Kunwar, Vice President and CEO of HMD India and APAC, expressed pride in showcasing indigenous AI capabilities on feature phones in front of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He stated that this partnership is a crucial step towards democratizing AI, providing local and user-friendly AI experiences not only to smartphone users but also to millions of feature phone users.

The company announced that several AI-equipped feature phone models will be launched in the coming months, with the goal of making AI truly inclusive and accessible to every segment of the country.

During the summit, a highlight was the live demonstration of Sarvam AI‘s technology on HMD Nokia feature phones, which Prime Minister Modi observed. The demo showcased real-time speech recognition, translation, and text-to-speech functionalities in ten Indian languages.

Notably, all these services operated smoothly without an internet connection, showcasing the robustness of on-device AI technology.

This partnership aligns with the summit’s theme, “Sarvajan Hitay, Sarvajan Sukhay,” aimed at utilizing technology for public welfare. Sarvam AI’s technology is being developed under the India AI mission, focusing on India’s linguistic and cultural diversity.

By providing voice-based AI services in local languages, this initiative seeks to bridge the digital divide. Users will be able to access information, manage daily tasks, and utilize digital services through voice commands in their preferred languages.

This initiative is considered a new benchmark for inclusive AI innovation in the country and is expected to strengthen India’s position as an emerging global AI leader.
