New Delhi, March 7: Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded to President Droupadi Murmu’s remarks regarding the International Santhal Conference in West Bengal. He described the situation as shameful and unprecedented, expressing that anyone who believes in democracy and the empowerment of tribal communities must feel disheartened.
In a post on the social media platform X, PM Modi highlighted the pain and sorrow expressed by President Murmu, who hails from the tribal community. He stated that the TMC government in West Bengal has crossed all limits, holding the administration accountable for the disrespect shown to the President.
He further lamented that it is equally unfortunate that the West Bengal government is treating significant matters like Santhal culture with such negligence. The office of the President should be above politics, and its dignity must always be respected. He expressed hope that the TMC and the West Bengal government would cultivate a sense of improvement.
During her visit to Darjeeling, President Murmu addressed the public, stating that the International Santhal Conference was taking place. She noted that it would have been better if the event had been held in the region, as it is vast and could easily accommodate a large crowd. She questioned the administration’s decision to hold the conference in a location far from where the Santhal people could attend.
President Murmu expressed her disappointment that local residents could not participate due to the event’s remote location. She speculated that perhaps the administration hoped for a low turnout so that she could leave without incident.
She also remarked that when the President visits a location, the Chief Minister and ministers should be present, but they were not. “I am also a daughter of Bengal. Didi Mamata is like my sister, my younger sister. I do not know if she was upset with me, which led to this situation,” she added.
