
New Delhi, March 28: Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal emphasized the need to address the imbalances stemming from the Uruguay Round in ongoing discussions at the WTO. He stated that all members should have equal opportunities to enhance productive capacity, create jobs, and ensure meaningful participation in global trade.
Goyal asserted that the multilateral trading system must guarantee that innovation, development, and opportunities are shared equally among all WTO members. He also expressed India’s commitment to engaging constructively to maintain the WTO’s central role in global trade.
Currently attending the 14th Ministerial Conference (MC 14) in Yaoundé, Cameroon, Goyal met with several world leaders on the sidelines, including U.S. Trade Representative Jamison Greer.
Regarding their meeting, he mentioned, “We shared thoughts on the WTO MC 14 agenda, the next steps in the India-U.S. BTA discussions, and explored ways to deepen economic cooperation and bilateral trade relations.”
Additionally, he met with Canada’s International Trade Minister, Mary Ng, to review the progress of the recently initiated India-Canada CEPA negotiations and discuss measures to further strengthen bilateral trade and economic cooperation.
In a meeting with New Zealand’s Trade and Export Growth Minister, Todd McClay, the leaders exchanged views on the progress of the agenda and reviewed ongoing work related to the recently concluded India-New Zealand FTA. Goyal stated, “We also discussed measures to enhance bilateral trade and investment and strengthen cooperation in areas of mutual interest.”
He also met with Morocco’s Secretary of State for Foreign Trade, Omar Haji, reaffirming their historical partnership and exploring ways to bolster bilateral trade and investment cooperation.
Furthermore, Piyush Goyal engaged with the Foreign Minister of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Dwight Bramble, and Jamaica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Kamina Smith.
