Washington, May 13: Pentagon leaders have declined to publicly disclose a detailed assessment of the damage incurred during the ongoing conflict with Iran.
This issue arose during a Senate Appropriations Subcommittee hearing on President Donald Trump’s proposed $1.5 trillion defense budget. Some lawmakers requested information from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Joint Chiefs Chairman General Dan Keen regarding Iran’s missile, drone, and naval capabilities.
Democratic senators repeatedly questioned whether the administration’s claims about weakening Iran’s military infrastructure align with classified intelligence assessments.
Lawmakers raised concerns about whether the administration had underestimated Iran’s retaliatory military capabilities, particularly regarding drones and asymmetric naval strategies in the Strait of Hormuz. Senator Brian Schatz inquired if the Pentagon had accurately assessed Iran’s retaliatory capacity following U.S. strikes.
Senator Christopher Murphy referenced public reports indicating that Iran maintained 70% of its missile and drone capabilities weeks after U.S. actions. Murphy directly asked Dan Keen if he disagreed with these intelligence estimates.
However, Dan Keen categorically refused to provide information about intelligence reports. He stated, “With all due respect, I will not comment on what the intelligence community has assessed or not assessed.” He further added, “I will also not answer how Congress will decide to continue funding based on any criteria.”
Senator Murphy argued that without a transparent assessment, lawmakers cannot accurately evaluate the success of these actions. He asked, “If you cannot tell us the real assessment, how can we decide whether to continue funding for this action?”
Hegseth also refused to discuss wartime assessments publicly. The Defense Secretary stated, “This is not a classified meeting. We do not discuss such matters here.”
Hegseth dismissed claims that the Pentagon was unprepared or caught off guard by the situation. He assured, “I can assure you that everything was accounted for.”
Notably, the U.S. administration has consistently stated that its primary goal is to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Officials have also claimed that a significant portion of Iran’s navy, missile launch systems, and defense industrial infrastructure has been destroyed.
