Over 596,000 PNG Connections Activated in India, Government Reports

New Delhi, May 2: The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas announced on Saturday that approximately 596,000 piped natural gas (PNG) connections have been activated since March 2026. Additionally, infrastructure has been prepared for another 268,000 connections, raising the total capacity to 864,000 connections.

In an official statement, the ministry revealed that nearly 666,000 consumers have registered for new connections. As of May 1, over 43,350 PNG consumers have surrendered their LPG connections.

Since April 2026, more than 2.27 million units of 5-kilogram FTL cylinders have been sold. The ministry also reported that public sector oil marketing companies (PSU OMCs) have conducted over 9,980 awareness camps since April 3, selling more than 171,000 5-kilogram FTL cylinders.

From April 2026 to date, a total of 205,849 metric tons of commercial LPG have been sold, equivalent to 10.83 million 19-kilogram LPG cylinders. In the same period, PSU OMCs have sold 10,698 metric tons of auto LPG.

Gas supply to fertilizer plants has been increased to nearly 98 percent of their average usage over the past six months.

The statement highlighted that all refineries in the country are operating at high capacity, with sufficient crude oil stocks available. Additionally, adequate reserves of petrol and diesel have been maintained.

To meet domestic demand, LPG production at refineries has also been ramped up. Furthermore, an inter-ministerial joint working group (JWG) has been established to ensure the supply of petrochemical raw materials in the domestic market.

Since April 9, over 10,000 metric tons of propylene and more than 1,200 metric tons of butyl acrylate have been sold to the chemical, pharmaceutical, and paint industries from refineries in Mumbai, Kochi, Visakhapatnam, Chennai, Mathura, and Gujarat.

Regarding fuel availability, the government stated that all petrol pumps across the country are operating normally. However, some areas have witnessed panic buying due to rumors. The government reassured that there is an adequate stock of petrol and diesel at all petrol pumps, with no changes in prices.
