Mumbai, April 28: Following a blast on the railway track near the Shambhu-Haryana border in Patiala, concerns regarding security measures have been raised. Leaders from the opposition, including Sukhbir Singh Badal, have condemned the incident, accusing the government of negligence. They argue that despite receiving intelligence inputs, no precautions were taken. There are now calls for Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to take immediate and stringent action.
Sukhbir Singh Badal, president of the Shiromani Akali Dal, expressed his condemnation of the “cowardly attempt” on social media platform X. He stated, “It is evident that no precautionary measures were taken despite warnings received days in advance. This incident follows multiple blasts at police stations and even an RPG attack on the state intelligence headquarters.”
He further urged Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, who also serves as Home Minister, to awaken from his deep slumber and take necessary steps to secure vital infrastructure. He warned that Mann’s careless attitude is pushing Punjab back into a dark era, which is completely unacceptable.
Bikram Singh Majithia, general secretary of the Shiromani Akali Dal, also condemned the incident on X. He noted that the powerful blast on the Shambhu-Ambala railway track damaged the track, disrupting train services. Following the Sirhind blast and the discovery of suspicious items in Gurdaspur, repeated incidents have raised serious concerns about security in Punjab. He questioned what the Chief Minister and Home Minister Bhagwant Mann are doing in this situation.
Majithia pointed out that there has been no clear action plan or high-level review regarding law and order. He accused the police of being used as a political tool, stating that security decisions are being made with political interests in mind rather than public safety. He criticized the government for focusing on protecting those who defame MPs and shelter truck union leaders while ordinary citizens are left vulnerable. The fear of a return to the law and order situation of the 1980s and 1990s is growing.
He asked, “Is there any functioning government? Who will take responsibility? How many more incidents must occur before action is taken? This reflects not just negligence but a serious failure.”
Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Wadding also took to X to highlight two alarming incidents that occurred in Punjab that morning: the murder of two individuals in Batala and the bomb blast on the railway track between Rajpura and Shambhu. He described these as ominous signs, indicating that the hard-won peace in Punjab is now at risk.
He criticized the Aam Aadmi Party government for being preoccupied with its own survival, allowing anarchists and criminals to exploit the situation. He emphasized that the government has been repeatedly warned about the deteriorating law and order situation in the state.
Wadding lamented that the government’s priorities seem limited to preserving its existence rather than protecting the lives and property of the people of Punjab. Instead of monitoring criminals and troublemakers, the AAP government appears focused on surveilling its own legislators for clear reasons.
