New Delhi, August 7: Public sector oil marketing companies (OMCs) in India have dismissed concerns regarding the quality of E20 petrol. They stated that extensive investigations conducted nationwide found no evidence of moisture or chloride contamination in the fuel. The companies emphasized that the quality of ethanol-blended petrol (EBMS), or E20, remains within established standards, assuring consumers that there is no cause for concern.
In a joint statement, the oil companies addressed recent media reports questioning the moisture and chloride levels in E20 petrol. Following these reports, a thorough testing campaign was initiated across the entire supply chain. The investigation results showed no signs of fuel contamination, and all samples met the required quality standards.
The companies highlighted that fuel quality is their top priority. If any issues arise that could affect vehicle performance or consumer trust, they are investigated scientifically, and necessary corrective actions are taken promptly.
According to the companies, the government has set stringent standards for chloride levels in ethanol blended with petrol. A robust monitoring system has been implemented throughout the supply chain to ensure compliance with these standards.
The companies further explained that chloride testing is conducted at various levels across the country, including refineries, distilleries, depots, terminals, and petrol pumps. This multi-tiered monitoring system aims to ensure that fuel quality meets the established standards at every level.
Additionally, daily checks for water contamination and density are performed 8 to 12 times at all petrol pumps. Mobile fuel quality testing labs have been deployed in several locations, and fuel samples are also tested in independent laboratories.
The oil companies stated that this strong and multi-layered testing system has once again proven that the quality of E20 petrol in India is safe and compliant with the established standards.
They also reported that over 100 randomly selected petrol samples from refineries across the country underwent chloride testing. The tests revealed that all samples contained chloride levels of 1 part per million (ppm) or less, which is within the permissible limit.
According to the companies, these results demonstrate that the quality control measures implemented in India’s refining and fuel distribution system are functioning effectively, and there is no basis for the concerns raised about E20 petrol quality.
The oil companies expressed confidence that the ethanol blending program is a significant step towards the country’s energy self-sufficiency and environmental goals, with continuous stringent monitoring of quality and safety standards to ensure its success.
