Bhubaneswar, June 16: In a significant police operation, a notorious criminal was injured during an encounter with law enforcement in the Keonjhar district of Odisha on Tuesday morning. The suspect, identified as Pravat Mallick, is the main accused in a recent armed robbery case.
Mallick is linked to a robbery that occurred on May 18 in Mukuna village, where two government officials were robbed of 8 lakh rupees. During the investigation into this armed robbery, police uncovered Mallick’s involvement. He has over 40 prior criminal cases registered against him, including theft and other serious offenses.
According to an official statement from the Keonjhar police, a team from the local police station achieved a major breakthrough by apprehending Mallick during a raid early Tuesday.
The police reported that during questioning, Mallick confessed to his role in the 8.18 lakh armed robbery and indicated where he had hidden the stolen money. While recovering stolen goods near the Mahuldia water tank in Belda, Mallick unexpectedly drew a concealed weapon and fired a shot at the officers.
In response, the Keonjhar police fired back in self-defense, injuring Mallick in his right leg. He was subsequently transported to the Keonjhar District Hospital for treatment, and later, doctors referred him to SCB Medical College in Cuttack for further care. A country-made firearm and the stolen cash were recovered from the scene.
The police have registered a new case under relevant sections of the BNS and Arms Act. Efforts to apprehend Mallick’s accomplices and recover additional stolen items are ongoing.
