North Korea Fires Missiles Towards Japan, Tokyo Condemns Act

Tokyo has strongly condemned North Korea after the country launched two ballistic missiles on Tuesday towards the Sea of Japan. According to Japanese media reports, the missiles were fired in the direction of the Japan Sea, raising security concerns in the region.

The Japanese Ministry of Defence stated that one of the missiles reached an altitude of approximately 80 kilometres and flew about 350 kilometres. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff reported that the missiles were launched from the northern area of Pyongyang around 3:50 PM local time.

A Japanese government official noted that the missiles appeared to have landed outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone. Following the incident, Japan issued a strong protest against North Korea’s actions.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has instructed government authorities to gather comprehensive information and ensure the safety of maritime vessels and aircraft in the area. So far, there have been no reports of any damage resulting from the missile launch.

Meanwhile, US Forces Korea reiterated America’s commitment to the defence of the United States and its regional allies. They confirmed awareness of the missile launch and stated they are closely coordinating with partners and allies. Their current assessment indicates no immediate threat to the US, its military personnel, or allied nations.

It is noteworthy that in December, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un oversaw tests of long-range strategic cruise missiles and called for the unlimited and continuous development of nuclear forces. At that time, he also inspected the construction of an 8,700-ton nuclear-powered strategic guided missile submarine.

According to Yonhap News Agency, recent missile drills were conducted in the Yellow Sea to demonstrate North Korea’s full reliability and wartime readiness of its strategic retaliatory capabilities. The Korean Central News Agency reported that these strategic cruise missiles successfully reached their targets after flying predetermined flight paths for 10,199 seconds and 10,203 seconds respectively.
