Bhopal, March 5: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has stepped in regarding the tragic suicide of an assistant professor at AIIMS Bhopal. The professor, Srishti, had accused her Head of Department, Parvez, of mental harassment. Despite multiple complaints, no satisfactory action was taken, leading her to take the drastic step of ending her life.
NHRC member Priyank Kanungo spoke to a news agency on Thursday, stating that notices have been issued to the Secretary of the Health Ministry, Bhopal Police, and the AIIMS administration. They have been asked to submit a report on the matter. Kanungo questioned how it was possible for a female doctor to lodge complaints three times without any effective response. He expressed concern that the situation had deteriorated to the point where the doctor felt compelled to end her life.
Kanungo further mentioned that the NHRC has requested satisfactory responses from all three parties within 15 days. The notice raised serious questions about the lack of action despite repeated complaints.
Additionally, the NHRC has sought information from the workplace’s internal complaints committee. They are particularly interested in understanding what steps the female doctor had taken over the past three years. The NHRC has also requested detailed responses regarding other related issues raised by the doctor.
Kanungo emphasized that it is unfortunate for any doctor to work in such a pressured environment. He stated that if the hospital administration fails to take appropriate action, it is an unacceptable situation. The NHRC plans to proceed with further actions once a comprehensive investigation report is received.
