Ahmedabad, March 8: The New Zealand cricket team has reached the finals of the T20 World Cup 2026. They will face the defending champions and hosts, India, in a match scheduled for Sunday evening at 7 PM at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. New Zealand’s Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has extended his best wishes to the team ahead of this crucial match.
In a video message shared on the social media platform X, Luxon stated, “The New Zealand team has made it to the finals of the T20 World Cup. It doesn’t get better than this. The team’s performance throughout the tournament has been outstanding. The entire country stands with you at this moment. You have the potential; go ahead and become champions.”
New Zealand has consistently performed well in ICC events. In the T20 World Cup 2026, they have thrilled cricket fans with their gameplay. During the group stage, New Zealand secured victories against Afghanistan, UAE, and Canada, while suffering a loss to South Africa, which allowed them to advance to the Super-8 stage. In the Super-8, they defeated Sri Lanka and earned a point from a rain-affected match against Pakistan, qualifying for the semifinals based on a better run rate.
In the semifinals, New Zealand delivered an impressive performance, achieving a one-sided victory against South Africa. Batting first, South Africa scored 169 runs for 8 wickets. Thanks to Finn Allen’s unbeaten 100 off 33 balls and Tim Seifert’s 58 off 33 balls, New Zealand chased down the target in just 12.5 overs, scoring 173 runs for the loss of 1 wicket, and won the match by 9 wickets to secure their place in the final.
This is New Zealand’s second final in the T20 World Cup. The team previously reached the finals in 2021 but faced defeat against Australia.
Interestingly, New Zealand has never lost a T20 World Cup match against India, and they have yet to win a T20 match in Ahmedabad. It remains to be seen if the Kiwi team can fulfill their dream of winning their first T20 World Cup.
