New Biometric Feature Launched in BHIM App for UPI Payments up to ₹5,000

New Delhi, March 24: The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has introduced a new biometric authentication feature in the BHIM Payments app for UPI transactions. This feature allows users to authorize payments up to ₹5,000 using their smartphone’s fingerprint or facial recognition, making transactions faster and more convenient.

With this new capability, users will no longer need to enter their UPI PIN for small transactions. This change aims to reduce the chances of failed payments due to incorrect PIN entries or forgotten PINs, thereby enhancing user experience.

The biometric feature can be utilized for common transactions such as sending money to friends and family, scanning merchant QR codes, and making online payments.

Lalita Nataraj, Managing Director and CEO of NPCI BHIM Services Limited (NBSSL), stated that the app’s goal is to make digital payments easier, safer, and accessible to everyone. She emphasized that biometric authentication will simplify everyday payments while maintaining security.

Nataraj also noted that confirming transactions through fingerprints or facial recognition will reduce reliance on PINs, ensuring that payments are directly linked to the user, thus enhancing security.

This new feature also improves security, as fingerprint and facial data are stored securely on the user’s device, minimizing the risk of PIN sharing or misuse. However, for transactions exceeding ₹5,000, users will still need to enter their UPI PIN, ensuring additional security for larger payments.

Currently, this feature is available on Android and iOS devices equipped with fingerprint or facial recognition capabilities.
