On June 10, he set a new record as the longest-serving elected Prime Minister, surpassing Jawaharlal Nehru’s tenure. Now, as he addresses the nation from the Red Fort on August 15, he is once again in the spotlight for breaking records. This year marks the 80th Independence Day, and Modi will hoist the national flag for the 13th consecutive time.
On June 10, Modi achieved a remarkable milestone by serving for 4,399 days, eclipsing Nehru’s record of 4,398 days. His upcoming address will be his 13th consecutive speech on Independence Day. Last year, he broke Indira Gandhi’s record of 11 consecutive flag hoistings by raising the flag for the 12th time. With this year’s ceremony, he aims to extend that record further, although Nehru still holds the record for the most flag hoistings at 17.
This year’s Independence Day celebrations are particularly exciting due to the anticipation surrounding Modi’s speech. Last year, he delivered a 103-minute address, breaking his previous record of approximately 98 minutes in 2024. If he exceeds 103 minutes this time, he will set a new record for the longest address by any Indian Prime Minister on Independence Day.
Another significant aspect of this year’s celebration is the 150th anniversary of “Vande Mataram.” For the first time, a special rendition of this iconic song will be performed during the Independence Day ceremony at the Red Fort. This adds a new chapter to the history of India’s Independence Day celebrations, beyond just Modi’s records.
As per tradition, the Prime Minister will receive a guard of honor from the Inter-Services and Delhi Police personnel, followed by the hoisting of the national flag and an address to the nation. This year, there is also an expected emphasis on youth power and the vision for a developed India by 2047.
