Mira Nair shared her thoughts on the project, stating, “Over the decades, my films have been influenced by Amrita Sher-Gil’s art in various ways. She provided me with a new perspective on the world and people. Having studied art in Europe, she aimed to depict the lives of ordinary people through her work. This has been a significant source of inspiration for me.”

Nair further emphasized, “Amrita’s use of colors and her ability to portray the faces and emotions of common people were truly unique, which has also influenced my cinematic vision.”

In “Amari,” actress Anjali Shivraman will portray Amrita Sher-Gil, while Emily Watson will take on the role of her mother, Marie Antoinette Gotsmann. Jaideep Ahlawat will play Amrita’s father, Umrao Singh Sher-Gil. Additionally, Anjana Vasan, Jim Sarbh, and Priyanka Chopra will also play significant roles in the film.

Priyanka Chopra is not only acting in the film but also serves as its executive producer.

Set in the early 20th century, the film’s narrative traverses Hungary, France, and India, showcasing how different cultures and countries shaped Amrita Sher-Gil’s thoughts and art. Regarded as one of India’s most influential female modern artists, Sher-Gil depicted Indian villages, women, and the lives of the underprivileged in a distinctive manner.
