Hyderabad, August 9: A tragic incident occurred in Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh, where a medical student succumbed to her injuries after being struck by a car driven by two intoxicated youths. The accident took place on August 3, near a mall, and the victim, K. Priyanka, passed away on Sunday in a hospital in Hyderabad.
Doctors at KIMS Hospital in Secunderabad declared the first-year postgraduate medical student dead at 3:25 PM. Priyanka, who was 28 years old, was pursuing her Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree at GSL Medical College in Rajahmundry, located in the East Godavari district.
On the night of the incident, Priyanka was riding her scooter with her friend Umesh when a speeding car collided with them. She sustained severe injuries and was initially admitted to a local hospital before being transferred to Hyderabad. She had been on a ventilator since the accident and was declared brain-dead earlier.
Following the post-mortem, her body will be taken to her village, Eklaspur, in Gadwal district for the last rites. Earlier in the day, police reported that a case of attempted culpable homicide had been filed against the two accused, Suvarapu Daswanth and Andrew Joseph Edwards.
It is believed that both men were under the influence of alcohol when they crashed their car into Priyanka’s scooter. D. Narasimha Kishore, the Superintendent of Police for East Godavari, stated that the case has been registered under Section 110 of the Indian Penal Code (attempted culpable homicide). He assured that the police would pursue strict penalties against the offenders.
Following Priyanka’s death, the police plan to upgrade the charges to culpable homicide. Investigations revealed that the accused had hit the scooter three times while attempting to flee after a confrontation with mall staff.
The mall employees had prevented Daswanth and Joseph from entering due to their intoxicated state, leading to a physical altercation. When security guards tried to apprehend them, they fled, driving recklessly and striking the parked scooter at the mall’s entrance.
After the incident, the accused fled the scene. Priyanka was rushed to a nearby hospital, and police were informed around 10 PM. Based on Umesh’s statement, the police registered a case and apprehended the suspects.
The police captain emphasized that there is no political pressure on the investigation. He stated that under the directives of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, the police are conducting a fair inquiry into the matter.
Earlier, Priyanka’s father, Venkatesh, met with police officials, demanding strict action against the accused. He expressed his trust in the police investigation and the judiciary, hoping for justice for his daughter.
