Mathura, May 7: Mathura police have successfully neutralized two notorious criminals in an encounter. The incident occurred early Thursday morning in the Tanti village area, following a sensational robbery case.
The deceased criminals have been identified as Dharmveer alias Lambu and Rajendra alias Pappu, both believed to be active members of the infamous Bawaria gang. Each had a bounty of ₹50,000 placed on their heads by the DIG.
On Thursday morning, police received information about the criminals’ presence in the Tanti village area. During the cordon operation, the criminals opened fire on the police team. In the ensuing exchange, both were injured. They were transported to the district hospital, where doctors pronounced them dead. Additionally, SWAT team leader Ajay Verma and constable Durvij Singh sustained injuries during the encounter.
SSP Shlok Kumar revealed that on the night of April 23, masked criminals had entered the home of businessman Ajay Agarwal, holding the entire family hostage. The criminals terrorized the family for nearly two hours, stealing ₹3.22 lakh in cash and approximately ₹12 lakh worth of jewelry. To evade identification, they also destroyed the CCTV cameras and took the DVR with them.
The incident caused a stir within the police department, leading to the formation of 17 teams to crack the case. Police scoured CCTV footage, tracing the criminals to the Khair area in Aligarh district. On April 25, the same criminals attempted another robbery at a trader’s house in Khair. Based on CCTV evidence, police were able to identify the suspects.
SSP Kumar noted that both criminals were highly cunning, often using different names and addresses when incarcerated. They faced numerous serious charges, including robbery and murder. One criminal had 16 cases against him, while the other had 11. Police have also recovered stolen goods, cash, and illegal weapons from their possession.
Mathura police are now focused on uncovering the entire network of the Bawaria gang and other associated criminals. This operation is being hailed as one of the most significant successes for the police in recent years.
