Mass Effect 5 Trailer Leaks After BioWare Closure Announced
A leaked trailer for the fifth Mass Effect game has surfaced online following BioWare's closure.
A trailer for the next installment in the Mass Effect series has leaked online after Electronic Arts (EA) announced the closure of BioWare, the studio behind the franchise. The closure follows EA’s layoffs of about 400 employees, marking a significant restructuring within the company.
The footage, which surfaced shortly after BioWare’s shutdown, was confirmed as authentic by multiple sources including Bloomberg and IGN. It features a new protagonist engaging with Liara T’Soni, a beloved character from the series, in a bar setting. Text in the trailer states that it contains ‘in-engine footage from our small team’ using ‘pre-production assets.’
In the two-minute clip, the protagonist, an ex-military officer, reveals his intentions to tackle conflicts before they arise. The trailer builds suspense as the protagonist learns about Liara’s role in igniting the very fires he seeks to extinguish, leading to an intense action sequence in the bar.
Reports indicate that BioWare’s closure was precipitated by the decision not to proceed with the early-development Mass Effect title, which had initially been teased in 2020. EA’s executives stated that only a small team was working on the project.
The cancellation of the game will not end the Mass Effect universe’s representation; an upcoming streaming series is currently in development. A petition circulating online urges EA to continue funding the franchise or license it to another studio, gathering nearly 17,500 signatures so far.
“What we were cooking was really cool,” said Derek Kunsken, a sci-fi author involved with the project.
The news of the trailer’s leak comes during a period of mourning for fans of BioWare, a studio known for defining the role-playing game genre. The studio’s legacy includes titles like Dragon Age and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
In a farewell message, the BioWare team expressed gratitude to fans, reflecting on their more than 30 years in the industry. They emphasized the deep connections formed through their games, stating, “Our focus right now is on our incredibly talented team who put their hearts into these games.”
