Imphal, March 19: A significant initiative is underway to establish Tamenglong district in Manipur as a leading honey producer. Under the Prime Minister’s Dhani-Dhan Agriculture Scheme (PMDDKY), over 100 farmers are receiving training and essential resources.
Tamenglong is one of the 100 districts selected for this program, designed based on the model of aspirational agricultural districts.
In the first phase, scientific beekeeping and breeding techniques are being implemented. The focus is on increasing the number of beehives among the trained farmers. This initiative aims to enhance the health, productivity, and sustainability of the bee population.
The district administration has launched this program in collaboration with Buzzwardi Venture Private Limited (Ambernath). During this period, a nodal officer is regularly conducting regional visits to review progress.
Tamenglong has been declared an aspirational district, and under the CSR initiative, financial assistance is being provided to 100 farmers for beekeeping. So far, approximately 500 beehive boxes have arrived in the district, and training has commenced. The target is to produce 1,000 liters of honey each month.
In the first phase, selected farmers will receive beekeeping equipment worth up to 8,000 rupees, including beehives.
According to the company’s Chief Operating Officer Vaibhav Trimukhe, scientific beekeeping will transition traditional methods to modern techniques, thereby increasing both productivity and income for farmers.
Notably, Tamenglong district is included in the list of 100 aspirational agricultural districts under PMDDKY. The Cabinet approved this scheme in July 2025, which will be implemented over six years starting from 2025-26.
The selection of districts under this scheme is based on criteria such as low productivity, low crop intensity, and limited credit distribution. The initiative aims to promote honey production in the country. Over the past decade, honey production in India has seen remarkable growth, with exports exceeding 1,500 crore rupees.
This program is inspired by the NITI Aayog’s aspirational district program and is considered a pioneering initiative focused on agriculture and related sectors.
