Mamata Banerjee Visits Hospital After Attack on Nephew Abhishek, Blames BJP

Kolkata, May 30: Mamata Banerjee, the leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and former Chief Minister of West Bengal, visited Apollo Hospital in Kolkata on Saturday. She was there to support her nephew, Abhishek Banerjee, who was attacked and assaulted in Sonarpur. Banerjee held the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the state BJP government responsible for the incident.

In a brief social media post on Saturday evening, Mamata Banerjee launched a fierce attack on the BJP, stating, “The rulers have now become murderers. BJP, you should be ashamed.” She also shared a video of the attack on Abhishek Banerjee along with a TMC post.

The TMC’s post highlighted that Abhishek Banerjee had refused to abandon the family of Sanju Karmakar, a victim of post-election violence, despite facing attacks from BJP-backed goons. He stood firm with the affected family.

Meanwhile, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge condemned the attack on social media. He expressed concern over the assault on Abhishek Banerjee, who was visiting families affected by post-election violence in Sonarpur. Kharge accused the BJP of failing to provide adequate police protection to a prominent opposition leader, reflecting the party’s politics of revenge and oppression.

He urged both the West Bengal and central governments to ensure the safety of all opposition leaders and to take immediate steps to prevent such incidents. He emphasized that political differences should never justify violence.

Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav also condemned the incident. He stated that the attack on a key opposition leader like Abhishek Banerjee proves that the BJP’s politics is rooted in hatred and violence.

Yadav pointed out that the lack of adequate police arrangements in such a sensitive situation indicates a larger conspiracy. He described the incident as completely condemnable.

It is noteworthy that Abhishek Banerjee faced local opposition in Sonarpur, South 24 Parganas district, where he was physically assaulted, pelted with eggs, and had his shirt torn. Following the incident, he was taken to the hospital for treatment.
