Mamata Banerjee Condemns Attack on Kolkata High Court Lawyer

Kolkata, October 4 (Daily Kiran) : Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has strongly condemned the attack on Shamim Ahmed, a lawyer from the Kolkata High Court, which occurred in the Salboni police station area of West Midnapore on Sunday.

Banerjee demanded action against the assailants and urged the administration to ensure the safety of lawyers. She expressed her shock over the brutal attack on Ahmed, a newly elected member of the West Bengal Bar Council, and highlighted that he was pressured to change his complaint. Following intervention by the Chief Justice of the Kolkata High Court, Ahmed was able to return home safely.

This incident comes amid reports that Ahmed, along with a group of lawyers from the Kolkata High Court and Midnapore Court, was targeted three times before reaching the Salboni police station area. The lawyers alleged that the attackers used sticks, shovels, and bamboo during the assaults. Three male lawyers and two female lawyers sustained injuries, with accusations of harassment against the women.

After the incident, the West Midnapore police evacuated the lawyers from the area for their safety. However, they were reportedly attacked again near the Salboni police station, and three vehicles were vandalized.

In her remarks, Banerjee also referred to recent attacks on lawyers at the Bankshal Court and Baruipur Court, stating that such violence is unacceptable. She emphasized that a culture of lawlessness cannot prevail in West Bengal.

“The rule of law must prevail over political violence,” she asserted, insisting that every lawyer, regardless of political affiliation, should be able to perform their duties without fear. Banerjee condemned the recurring violence perpetrated by BJP goons and called on the administration to ensure the safety of lawyers while taking strict and impartial action against the culprits.
