Itanagar, October 4 (Daily Kiran) : Chief Minister Pema Khandu of Arunachal Pradesh announced on Sunday that the number of MBBS seats at the Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIMFS) has doubled from 50 to 100 over the past two years. He also revealed plans to establish two additional medical colleges in the state.
The state is preparing to set up a second medical college in Namsai, with construction expected to begin soon. A third medical college is being planned in the West Kameng-Tawang region, which will have an intake capacity of around 150 students under a public-private partnership (PPP) model.
Khandu mentioned that a delegation of investors from Delhi is scheduled to visit the proposed site and engage in discussions with the relevant departments.
On the same day, Khandu inaugurated a dedicated 33-kilowatt power substation and the second phase of staff quarters at the Ramakrishna Mission Hospital in Itanagar. He assured ongoing government support for strengthening health services and educational initiatives in Arunachal Pradesh.
Reflecting on the long-standing relationship between the state and the Ramakrishna Mission, which began with the establishment of a school in Aalo in 1966, Khandu highlighted the significant contributions of educated alumni in public service and governance.
He emphasized the state government’s commitment to enhancing educational opportunities by recently urging Ramakrishna Mission officials to expand into higher education in Arunachal Pradesh. After discussions with the mission’s leadership, theoretical approval has been granted for two colleges in Aalo and Narottam Nagar. The government is exploring ways to utilize existing infrastructure to launch these institutions promptly.
Khandu praised the educational institution established by the Ramakrishna Mission in Lamdung, East Kameng district, noting its potential to address the shortage of quality education in western Arunachal Pradesh.
He also mentioned that the upcoming 200-bed expansion of the Ramakrishna Mission Hospital will significantly enhance healthcare delivery in the state. Additionally, he stressed the need for proactive planning for water infrastructure due to rapid urbanization in the Itanagar-Naharlagun area.
The Chief Minister stated that a major water supply project proposal for the capital region has been prepared and submitted to the central government, with efforts underway to expedite its approval. He also drew attention to the poor living conditions of existing staff and doctors at the hospital, many of whom reside in outdated accommodations from the 1970s and 1980s.
