New Delhi, August 12: A significant wildlife rescue operation conducted by the Delhi Police’s Central District, in collaboration with ‘People for Animals’ (PFA), ‘World Wide Animal’, and the Delhi Forest and Wildlife Department, has successfully rescued a total of 863 animals and birds.
An official statement revealed that on August 9, PFA received credible information regarding the illegal sale, possession, and captivity of protected birds and animals at pet shops in the pigeon market near Jama Masjid in the national capital. Following this information, the police alerted ‘World Wide Animal’ and officials from the Delhi Forest and Wildlife Department.
Acting swiftly on the tip-off, personnel from the Jama Masjid police station and Central District Police joined forces with PFA, ‘World Wide Animal’, and the Delhi Forest and Wildlife Department for a coordinated raid.
During the joint operation, five pet shops in the pigeon market were systematically inspected. The result was the recovery of 863 animals and birds, including 431 protected/scheduled birds.
In addition to the birds, the team rescued 18 guinea pigs, nine gray squirrels, 41 white rats, and 11 rabbits. Investigators reported that the birds and animals were found confined in cages, many of which were overcrowded and in filthy conditions. Species subjected to cruelty were rescued by PFA in accordance with the law.
The rescued animals and birds were examined, identified, and segregated with the assistance of relevant wildlife and animal welfare organizations. The protected/scheduled birds were seized by the appropriate wildlife authorities.
This operation was led by a dedicated police team from the Jama Masjid police station, including Sub-Inspector Bijender, Lady Sub-Inspector Saloni, and Head Constable Vinod, under the supervision of the station’s SHO and the overall oversight of the ACP of Daryaganj.
The team conducted a thorough inspection of the pet shops and collaborated with ‘World Wide Animal’, PFA, and the Delhi Forest and Wildlife Department for the seizure and rescue efforts.
Following a complaint from an activist associated with PFA and based on findings from the raid, an FIR was registered at the Jama Masjid police station (Central District, Delhi).
Authorities have identified five individuals in connection with this case and have secured bail from them under the law. The individuals are Iqbal Khan, Akash, Kani Ram, Mo. Adil Khan, and Rashid Khan, all residents of the Jama Masjid pigeon market.
So far, there has been no information or confirmation regarding any previous criminal activities involving these five individuals.
