Major Restructuring in West Bengal Chief Ministers Office

Kolkata, May 10: Newly appointed Chief Minister of West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, has implemented significant changes in the bureaucratic structure of the Chief Minister’s office within 24 hours of taking oath.

Sixteen bureaucrats associated with the previous Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s administration have been replaced with new officials. Notably, Shantanu Mukhopadhyay, an IAS officer from the 2014 batch and a close aide of Banerjee, is among those transferred.

Pratap Nayak, a prominent leader of the West Bengal Government Employees Union affiliated with the Trinamool Congress, has been reassigned to the Palbazaar Block Development Office in Darjeeling district.

Additionally, 46 officers who served as principal secretaries during Banerjee’s tenure have been temporarily assigned to the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms. Their future postings will be decided later.

Just hours after Suvendu Adhikari’s oath-taking ceremony, retired IAS officer Subrata Gupta was appointed as an advisor to the Chief Minister. Furthermore, Subrata Bala, an IAS officer from the 2017 batch, has been designated as the Chief Minister’s principal secretary, previously serving as the Additional District Magistrate of South 24 Parganas.

Meanwhile, Kolkata police officials have transferred 93 officers, including sub-inspectors, inspectors, assistant commissioners, and deputy commissioners, out of the city police jurisdiction. Most of these officers were influential in the Trinamool-affiliated police welfare union.

These 93 officers have been reassigned to various locations in North Bengal, including Cooch Behar, Kalimpong, Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, and Alipurduar, as well as tribal-dominated districts in the western region of West Bengal, such as Bankura and Purulia.
