Major Drug Bust in Kupwara: Opium Cultivation Destroyed and One Arrested

Kupwara, April 28: In a significant operation, Kupwara police have achieved major success in drug-related cases through two separate actions. In one case, authorities uncovered and destroyed illegal opium cultivation, while in another, a suspect was arrested with cannabis-like substances.

In the first incident, police received credible information regarding Mohammad Ramzan Sheikh, a resident of Sheikh Mohalla in the village of Gushi, who was allegedly cultivating opium on his property. Acting swiftly on the tip-off, police arrived at the scene and began a search of the premises, where they discovered the illegal cultivation. An FIR was filed under the NDPS Act.

Following administrative procedures, the executive magistrate oversaw the destruction of the opium plants on-site. Samples of the plants were also seized for further investigation. The inquiry into the matter is ongoing.

In the second case, a patrol team from Kralpora police station stopped a suspicious individual during routine patrol in the village of Shalura. The suspect attempted to flee upon noticing the police but was apprehended by the vigilant team.

Upon questioning, he was identified as Ejaz Ahmad Bhat, son of Ghulam Mohiuddin Bhat, a resident of Shumnag. During the search, a substance resembling cannabis was found in his possession. After confirming the drugs, he was arrested.

An FIR has been registered under the NDPS Act, and an investigation has commenced. Police have stated that a thorough inquiry is underway.

It is noteworthy that the Jammu and Kashmir police are actively taking significant measures against drugs and drug traffickers.
