Jammu, May 2: In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, Anantnag police have demolished an illegal shopping complex linked to a drug peddler. The operation took place in the Wagahama area of the Bijbehara region, where the accused, Sajjad Ahmad Rather, had constructed the complex on government land.
According to officials, the complex housed approximately 15 shops and was valued at around one crore rupees.
The police stated that this action is part of an ongoing investigation related to a case registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Sajjad Ahmad Rather has long been accused of being connected to a drug trafficking network. Investigations revealed that he used illegally acquired funds to establish this commercial complex on government property.
The demolition was carried out by Anantnag police in collaboration with civil administration. Officials noted that the complex was strategically located along National Highway NH-44, enhancing its commercial significance. However, following revelations of illegal construction and ties to drug trafficking, the administration decided to take action.
The police have made it clear that they will continue to enforce a “zero tolerance” policy against drug trafficking and associated illegal properties. Authorities emphasize that such measures aim not only to dismantle illegal networks but also to convey a strong message that lawbreakers will not be spared.
Local residents have welcomed this action, expressing hope that it will curb drug-related activities in the area. The police have urged the public to report any suspicious drug-related activities immediately to help rid the community of this threat.
Earlier on Thursday, Ramban police arrested a drug trafficker and seized narcotics from him. During a routine checkpoint at Railway Chowk, a police team from Banihal station spotted a man acting suspiciously and successfully apprehended him. A search revealed a substance resembling heroin. The individual identified himself as Tauheed Ahmad Khan, son of Jan Mohammad Khan, a resident of Hamdania Colony, Bemina, Srinagar, and was found in possession of 4.54 grams of a substance resembling heroin and plastic packaging.
